Thanks to voter support for Measures B and T and State Senate Bill 1, we are quickly improving San José streets.
In 2021, we will pave 222 miles of streets. This includes 80 miles of major streets and 142 miles of local and neighborhood streets. Additionally, there were about 30 miles of streets from the 2020 program that were put on "winter suspension" due to cold or rainy weather. Work on those streets will resume this spring 2021.
Keep track of our progress using the map on the tab labeled “2021 Paving” above. There, you will see three categories of streets:
Remaining: These streets are scheduled for pavement maintenance in 2021 but work has not begun yet. If you live on one of these streets, you may see some preparatory work, such as tree trimming, concrete upgrades, or sections of asphalt being removed and replaced. Work to prepare these streets for paving will have little impact on normal street use but may require limited parking restrictions or lane closures.
In Progress: These streets are actively undergoing pavement work or will begin work within two weeks. Streets will remain in this category until final striping and marking has been finished and inspected. If you live on an “In Progress” street, keep an eye out for mailers, door hangers, and/or signs on the street with more detailed information about work dates, parking restrictions, and temporary road closures.
Completed: Major work is done on these streets.
Down the Road
By 2028, we will repave all 1,552 miles of local and neighborhood streets. That’s like repaving a two-lane road from here to Dallas!
We will also continue a schedule of maintenance for most of our major streets. These larger roads carry most of San José’s traffic. They are crucial for the safe movement of people and goods. Each year, we update our three-year paving plan. Select the “Pavement Maintenance” tab above to see which streets are on that list. Learn more about our pavement maintenance program at https://www.sanjoseca.gov/your-government/departments/transportation/roads/pavement Thank you for your patience and understanding while we rejuvenate San José’s streets. Please obey all road closures, parking restrictions, and detours during preparation and construction. Your cooperation will help our work go smoothly, and allow life on your street to return to normal faster.
