Background
My Brother’s Keeper was initiated by President Barack Obama in 2014 to address issues of systematic racism as a barrier to accessing equal opportunities. By partnering with various cities, the Administration sought to provide men of color with the opportunity to reach their full potential. In January 2015, the City of San José joined local governments across the country in accepting the My Brother’s Keeper Community Challenge. San José adopted this initiative in an effort to address the persistent opportunity gap that divides young men of color from their peers. Today, it is clear that an initiative of this caliber is needed more than ever. Recognizing this need, Vice Mayor Chappie Jones has made My Brother’s Keeper a priority initiative in his office – working with agencies, organizations, and individuals to bring this imperative initiative back to life from its inception.

Mission
Through the My Brother’s Keeper Initiative, the Office of Vice Mayor Chappie Jones has partnered with local agencies, high school districts, and community members, creating an advisory team which will work to eliminate barriers that prevent young men of color from reaching their full potential. This initiative targets young African American men experiencing demonstrated risk factors and marginalization.

Goals
The goal is to provide young men of color the opportunity and pathway to reach their full potential regardless of circumstance or background. The goals are:
  1. Identify young men of color currently attending high school in the City of San José
  2. Connect these individuals with services such a mentorship, tutors, and support networks
  3. Prepare these students to graduate high school with a readiness for college and/or career
  4. Reduce youth engagement in crime by creating a path for success

Anticipated Outcomes
Through My Brother’s Keeper, the Vice Mayor and advisory team hope to create safe and supportive environments for young men of color to feel valued and heard, while also eliminating barriers, providing them with sufficient opportunities, and a means to prosper.

Advisory Team
The Office of Vice Mayor Jones has partnered with members of the Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, Oak Grove High School, and the African American Community Services Agency to create an advisory team which aims to provide you men of color with the appropriate resources, mentorships, and networks to encourage them to reach their full potential. The advisory team holds meetings every three weeks to discuss the framework, progress, and desired outcomes.
