In January 1999, the City of San Jose began a strategic planning process to assess community needs for therapeutic recreation and human services. The City engaged residents and service partners to create special programs, facilities, therapeutic recreation, and services designed to meet the needs of individuals with a range of disabilities. Now, both, the City and Santa Clara County work with their partners to foster inclusive recreation.
Disability Awareness Day was born as a way to promote awareness and appreciation of people with differing abilities and to educate the general public on the many challenges people with disabilities encounter every day. It empowers people with differing abilities and their families by providing information and resources that allow them to overcome barriers. This day celebrates diversity and strives to build an integrated community in which all people are equally valued.
On Thursday, October 4th, 2018, from 11 AM – 2 PM, an estimated 10,000 persons with disabilities, families, friends, organizations, and supporters from across the Bay Area will come together to celebrate at San Jose City Hall Rotunda, located at 200 E. Santa Clara Street, San Jose, CA 95113.
This event includes a resource fair, games & activities, food trucks, live entertainment, art displays, demos, and so much more. Our organizers this year include representatives from the City of San Jose – Office of Councilmember Chappie Jones and Department of Parks, Recreation & Neighborhood Services, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, the California Department of Rehabilitation, the Santa Clara County Office of Education, Services for Brain Injury, San Andreas Regional Center, Silicon Valley Independent Living Center, and the San José Human Services Commission.
It is our hope that you will join us in celebrating the varied abilities that make each of us unique yet bring us together as a community. Without the support of our sponsors, we could not have made this event possible each year. You can find detailed sponsorship information below.
If you have any questions or would like to confirm your support, please contact the Office of Councilmember Chappie Jones at email@example.com or (408) 535-4901. We hope you will join us in celebrating and empowering persons with different abilities.
