I am pleased to inform you that the city will be installing a new enhanced crosswalk across Hamilton Avenue at Latimer Avenue. This crosswalk will improve the safety of school children crossing from the Hathaway neighborhood to Latimer Elementary School and Moreland Middle School. The design of this sidewalk is based on the results of studies by our Department of Transportation (DOT) and community feedback.
The enhanced crosswalk will include a center island refuge, flashing lights, and “bump outs” near the existing curbs that provide for a more secure crossing. Great addition to the neighborhood!
The proposed CVS, at Quito Road and Saratoga Avenue, was approved at the City Council meeting on June 21st, 2016. The approved Conditional Use Permit and Determination of Public Convenience or Necessity will allow the construction of a 14,700 sq. ft. commercial building with a drive-through (solely for pharmacy use) , and off-sale of full range of alcohol.
My office worked extensively with the community and CVS to improve both the design and operations of this project. In response to community concerns, CVS removed their request for 24-hour operations, and significantly changed the design to eliminate CVS truck traffic onto nearby neighborhoods streets and improve pedestrian access. I also requested that CVS perform a traffic study within 6-9 months of completion of construction to study the impact the store has on the local area.
This brand new CVS will replace the existing CVS located down the street on Prospect Road. Our office has learned that a new Goodwill store will replace the CVS at the Prospect Road location.
