In the past year or so, the City Council has addressed some resident concerns as they relate to trees—particularly our policies on illegal tree removals. While the Council has made some positive changes, it has become increasingly apparent that the City must revisit all of our tree policies and services. While this sounds like a simple task, our tree policies span 9 different City departments, with each department responsible for unique component of tree-related services. Reevaluating our policies on trees will take a collaborative effort that I hope you, as a San José resident, will participate in.
Several meetings have been held with community members and City staff to generate input that will help to guide the necessary revisions. On June 30th, 80 residents attended a community meeting at West Valley Library to share their thoughts and suggestions on how best to amend our tree-related policies in the municipal code. There were many wonderful suggestions and I would like to continue this dialogue to ensure that our all of policies resonate with you and your neighbors.
As we move forward with our review of tree-related services and policies, staff will be focusing on our overall goals, strategies for enhancing our urban forest, improving regulatory mechanisms, and developing a Citywide tree inventory. These focal points are listed below. I encourage you to take a look at them and let me know where you think there is room for improvement or where the City might develop new and innovative policies to achieve our goals.

- protecting and enhancing urban forest

It is critical that we work together to address this issue. Our policies must be enforceable and fair, while our services must address the needs of San José residents within the means of the City’s budget. If you would like to take a look at the City’s current policies, you can view Title 13 of our Municipal Code by clicking here. You can also click here to learn more about tree permits.
Staff is expected to present revisions to our tree-related policies this fall, so be sure to let my office know if you have any recommendations as quickly as possible. Please send suggestions to my aide Crystal Morrow by calling her at (408) 535-4901 or emailing her at crystal.morrow@sanjoseca.gov.
Thanks for your help and have a wonderful 4th of July,
