When the bells toll on Friday the 13th at the Winchester Mystery House, they'll be tolling for San Jose City Councilman Pete Constant.
Well, more accurately, they'll be tolling because of Constant. Each time the ominous date appears on the calendar — as it does this week — the San Jose tourist attraction brings in a special guest to ring the mansion's bells 13 times at 1 p.m. (aka 1300 hours).
Constant says he was honored to be asked to perform the duty at the Winchester House, which is in his council district. Knowing that the house's superstitious originator, Sarah Winchester, was obsessed with spider-web patterns, he'll be wearing a tie emblazoned with one.
While the councilman has visited the house several times, his five young children have yet to do so and often ask when they can set foot in "the castle." Since Friday is a school day, Constant says, they'll have to miss his performance and probably will have to wait until summer.
