As many of you know, District 1 is one of the most park-deficient areas in the City of San José, and is also almost entirely built out, with very little existing open land. Back in March of 2017, the City of San José had acquired property in District 1 designated for a new park. The site is located at 3257 Payne Avenue, the former home of the Pueblo De Dios Church as well as a District 1 community garden and KaBOOM! Playground.
This property will be able to accommodate approximately a 1.9-acre park in the future. The Community Garden will remain open and continue to be used by Community gardeners, and the City of San Jose will continue to honor the lease with the Academy of Mandarin Immersion.
Unfortunately, we cannot begin the community engagement process and discuss the planning for this park site. Due to the flooding that occurred in February 2017, the Department of Public Works has to address the restoring and repairing of damages caused by the floods and continue working on projects across the city that were already in line and had to be put on hold. While we currently do not have a date for when community outreach and planning will commence on this park project, we will be sure to provide you with updates as soon as they are available.
