Project PASSION is an ongoing quality of life program that I started for District 1. PASSION stands for Public and School Safety In Our Neighborhood. The purpose of the program is to act as a liaison between schools, city departments, and residents.
In the winter and spring of 2015, we began this program with Challenger School in the Strawberry Park Neighborhood. We were able to make changes to school’s traffic patterns by adding a loading zone, a no parking lane, and asked SJPD to do some local traffic enforcement. These actions together made the neighborhood a safer and quieter place.
Last summer we began engaging with Mitty High School and this fall added Easterbrook Discovery School, Latimer Elementary School, and Moreland Middle School to our work plan. Now that we have laid the groundwork with Mitty High School, we are ready to engage the community in a discussion about traffic, parking, and safety around the school. While no program can guarantee complete success, our goal is to move the needle in the right direction and make the neighborhood a safer place for residents and school children alike.
